Who We Are
Clifton Market was incorporated as a co-op in the State of Ohio in January 2014. Everyone is invited to shop at Clifton Market. You do not have to own a share, but if you would like to, you are welcome! We incorporated as a co-op to raise money for a common goal—“To put the grocery back in the grocery store!”
Keller’s IGA had been in this space from 1939-2011. When Keller’s closed, another IGA operator bought the building and gutted it. In 2013, he ran into personal difficulties and construction stopped. A small group of Clifton residents and friends met in August 2013 pondered the possibility of incorporating as a co-op, researching other co-ops across the country along with their bylaws.
We held our first public on March 15 at the Esquire Theatre, across the street from Clifton Market. We offered Shares at this meeting and quickly sold over 100 Shares that day. People really wanted “to put the grocery back in the grocery store!”
When you own a Share in Clifton Market, you can make an Owner Loan. Between July 28 and December 21, 2014, Clifton Market raised $1.8 million in Shares, Owner Loans and Grants. We closed on $2.9 million in loans from National Coop Bank, Shared Cooperative Capital and the Finance Fund on December 22, 2015. Construction began in April 2016 and we opened January 22, 2017!
Clifton Market is a testimonial to the co-op form of incorporation, which is a legal structure for sharing our money for a common goal. And everyone is welcome at Clifton Market! You do not have to own a Share to shop here—you just have to have fun shopping here!
